Summer/Articling Students and Associates:
Job Responsibilities:
- Attend at courts in the 416 & 905 areas for set dates, adjournments, guilty pleas, and trials
- Meet with clients both in and out of jail to conduct client interviews
- Conduct legal research and conduct crown pre-trials
- Prepare Charter motions and factums
Job Requirements:
- Ability to function in a high volume, fast paced criminal defence environment
- Ability to manage stress effectively
- Ability to empathize with marginalized individuals and provide them with a representative voice
- Ability to represent clients while maintaining professional boundaries
- Ability to think fast and negotiate effectively
- Ability to devise creative responses to clients’ legal problems emanating from social disadvantage
- Ability to conceptualize criminal defence law in a social justice paradigm
- Street smart and savvy to street culture
- Caring and helpful communicator with clear and articulate communication skills (oral & written)
- Driver’s license and automobile
Other Requirements:
- Interest in challenging the status quo
- Curiosity about the law and the psychology and politics of marginalization
- Practical and realistic understanding of how much one can help clients
- Knowledge of a second language is an asset
- Willingness to learn Legal Aid Ontario’s billing practices and procedures
